Liberty Mutual recently produced a short film about two lawyers “in love, but not in sync.” The film makes dating a lawyer look almost as appealing as eating glass.

Although this is entertaining and can be accurate at times–especially for trial attorneys and criminal defense lawyers–there are several misrepresentations that continue to pollute the view of lawyers both within the profession and the general public.
First, it is unethical for a lawyer to conceal evidence she is required by law to reveal. The scene implies she willfully advised a caller to conceal evidence in mounds of paper, which is arguably a violation of Rules 3.4(a)(1) and (3) of the New York Rules of Professional Conduct.
Second, lawyers like all people choose to let their cell phones interrupt their lives. Rule 1.3(a) requires us to act with reasonable diligence and promptness in representing a client. This leaves a lot open for discussion. I personally believe I am still reasonably diligent in representing my clients even if I take time to manage my personal needs. I am a more effective advocate for them when I have rested, eaten well and gotten a workout in.
Thanks for the amusement, Liberty, but no thanks to its part in furthering unreasonable expectations clients already have. Clients, I want to help you, but I will not violate any ethical rule or any law to help you, nor will I be at your beck and call for non-emergencies or self-created emergencies. We all need to get better at taking responsibility for our actions. Plan ahead. I will take time off to sleep, eat and maintain my relationships outside of work (although I admittedly need to get better at this). I recommend that you do, too. You’ll probably have fewer missteps and needs to call me. As crazy as it sounds, I am doing my best work when I am keeping you from needing me. :)

An insurance company makes a film about lawyers. Great.
I must say though that it is fairly accurate.
