Bigger is Better – World’s Largest Legal Directory
This is not a humble post. It is not full of business acumen, legal insight or bleeding edge technology advances. This is a cheerleading post about Avvo’s growth in appeal to both consumers and lawyers. I write not out of arrogance, but to answer the question we get asked by lawyers every day, “why should I spend time on Avvo instead of all of the other websites out there?”
When it comes to legal directories bigger is better – be it having the most lawyers, the most information or the most consumers using that information to chose a lawyer. Two Novembers ago, I wrote a post called “Avvo – World’s Largest Legal Directory” using some data to compare Avvo to the establishment. It’s time to update those stats:

Avvo – more lawyers, more ratings, more reviews and more people finding lawyers than anywhere else in the world. Lawyers, there are literally hundreds of websites in which you can invest your time and dollars. Prioritize Avvo, the one that delivers the biggest impact to your business. (Oh and we’re free.)
Data Sources
- Lawyers – Avvo (internal numbers), Lawyers.com search, Superlawyers – 5% of roughly 800,000 practicing lawyers.
- Rated Lawyers – Avvo (internal numbers), Lawyers.com search, Superlawyers – 5% of roughly 800,000 practicing lawyers.
- Lawyers w/Client Ratings – Avvo (internal numbers), Lawyers.com search
- Traffic Growth – Compete comparison of annual growth rate for Visits (Findlaw directory data on lawyers.findlaw.com requires a free log in to Compete to see subdomain data).

I’m confused – you say that there are 800K practicing lawyers in your data sources, then how do you have 1.1M lawyers on Avvo?

They aren’t all practicing lawyers . . . for example, judges or people who have left the legal profession (like Obama).

I am interested in speaking with someone about an attorney listing on Avvo for my firm.

Thanks for providing the graphs. I have been looking for data about this and this was presented in a simple and clear format. Thanks again.

I continue to be surprised when lawyers have not claimed their own profiles on AVVO. Simply claiming your profile gives a lawyer what amounts to a free website, hosted high on the web. And free is My Favorite Price.
But frankly, the strongest point of AVVO is simply that it has a better idea.
It permits potential clients to search for lawyers exactly as though they were books on Amazon, and clients apparently love that.
But wait, there’s more! When a lawyer goes to track down a referral in Hawaii, where’s he gonna go to find fast information about a legal community that he doesn’t know from a coconut?
If only there were a way to sort through hundreds of unknown lawyers and compare them for different variables like client satisfaction and location and overall ability!
Oh, wait. There is a way.
Now.
It’s called AVVO.

The way avvo’s search engine works is great. You can find whatever type of lawyer you need with ease. I’ve heard really great things about avvo so i think that everyone should try it out.

I think its great when lawyers get themselves known on the internet, then people can post reviews about them as well as get more presence when most of the time they arent getting much since it is so expensive these days to have a commercial on tv or the radio. Its easier and cheaper to get your name out there online. Really can be a great investment
