Marketing for lawyers is moving online at a rapid clip, and it is important for all rainmakers (or aspiring rainmakers) to harness the power of the Internet and Social Media Marketing. Learn online marketing techniques from the experts – lawyers and marketing consultants that use the web everyday to generate new clients and maintain their existing ones. Additionally, Avvo’s CEO, Mark Britton, will offer a one-hour CLE presentation on the ethical implications of online marketing (CLE credit valid for California, Oregon and Washington-licensed lawyers). Session 1 (30 mins): Core Web Presence and Online Marketing Fundamentals

Twitter, websites, Google Adwords, Superlawyers, blogs . . . How does a lawyer choose among the innumerable online marketing opportunities available today. The introductory session explores how attorneys can strategically tie all of these online resources together to bolster their Core Web Presence. In addition we explore the fundamentals of online marketing for lawyers:
- Google Analytics: a free platform for tracking the effectiveness of online marketing efforts
- Search Engine Optimization: the key to ranking high on search engine queries
Session 2 (one hour): Online Marketing: Tips from the Experts
Local Lawyers and online marketing experts will share tips on how to use the internet to your advantage, including advertising, thought leadership and social media marketing. Learn what works, what doesn’t and explore cost-effective secrets to doing it yourself.
Sesison 3 (one hour): Ethical Implications of Online Marketing
Presenter: Mark Britton, Founder and CEO, Avvo, Inc.
(one hour CLE ethics credit for California-licensed lawyers)
- This hour long session is designed to help lawyers and law firms understand the professional ethics rules and other state bar regulations governing advertising, particularly advertising online. Topics will include the following:
- Online Advertising: How rules differ for paid online marketing and ways in which they are much the same
Attorney & Law Firm Websites: Many state rules struggle with how to treat attorney websites. Are they more solicitation or in-person communication? - Social Media: Social media (Twitter, Facebook, blogging etc.) raises a host of issues with respect to advertising rules. Topics will include thoughts on ways to use these tools while still complying with advertising and solicitation rules

With all due respect, we were working with the Washington State Bar Association in 1997 or so, offering CLEs in online marketing. Indeed, I sold the WSBA on the idea of offering CLEs about the Internet (first CLE: 400+ turnout).
Attorneys have been marketing online for many years.
