Avvo – World’s Largest Legal Directory
Avvo is the world’s largest online legal directory.
There, I said it. Although my Australian Mum always told me to be humble, it’s time to let that cat out of the bag.
“How dare you make such a claim?” queries the dusty old legal publisher who believes that no new-fangled up-start can be larger than those established directories of the 19th century. Well, no matter how you slice it, Avvo is the largest: Avvo offers more lawyers, more lawyer ratings and more lawyer reviews than any other site on Planet Earth. Here is the relevant data:

While we are humbled by the growth Avvo has seen to date, we also realize that we still have many, many miles to travel. Stay tuned for much more to come.

Your data regarding FindLaw is inaccurate and misleading.
FindLaw.com was launched on January 9th, 1996.
A Compete comparison (not shown above, interestingly) shows FindLaw with 1,770,792 unique visitors between Oct. ‘07 and Oct. ‘08. That does, in fact, represent a decrease, but of 16.7%, not 25%. (Note that the number of unique visitors dwarfs Avvo’s 266,430.)
A final note. Perhaps a more intelligent or learned reader is aware of any online legal directories that were established in the 19th century (i.e. the 1800s) … I, however, am not.

Michael: Thanks for the info; I’ve updated Findlaw’s established date to 1996. The numbers you site from Compete are not for your legal directory; If you use Compete to compare your directory (lawyers.findlaw.com) with Avvo, you’ll see that in October, our traffic is actually higher than Findlaw’s. Findlaw’s growth rate was calculated from the directory numbers, and is in fact, a negative 25%.
You may have to establish a free account at Compete to view subdomain traffic data. This should clear up any confusion: http://siteanalytics.compete.com/avvo.com+lawyers.findlaw.com/?metric=uv
As for your 19th century question: Martindale-Hubbell was established in 1868.
