Avvo Powers WA CEO “Top Lawyers” Issue

I’m proud to announce that Avvo is powering Washington CEO’s first annual “Top Lawyers” issue. Washington CEO is Washington’s top business magazine, and this issue (their June issue) will hit newsstands at the end of this month. You can see the WA CEO press release here.
It is gratifying to have a top-notch publication like Washington CEO partnering with us. Even though we are young, the editorial staff at WA CEO intuitively understood the value of the Avvo Rating, and all of the other great information and guidance we assemble for consumers. We share the mission of helping Washington’s businesspeople choose the right lawyer.
A big thanks to the Avvo and Washington CEO teams that helped bring this to fruition. I look forward to hearing all of your compliments and complaints later this month.
Be well.

Why not international law? What percent does one have to devote to a particular area of law to qualify? On what date will this be determined? In other words, if I list 5% in some other area of law (like one that international law encompasses) can I still make it?

Always good to hear companies in the Seattle area are doing well. I’m on the MIT committee for the June 4th event and am looking forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts on the panel.
Hope the good press keeps coming your way, good job on getting things done!

Thank you Barry and Okorie. Sorry for the slow replies. Things have been fairly crazy around here lately.

Dan - My apologies to you as well. I have been managing the blog of late with limited success. I am spread a little too thin right now, but we have a number of great new hires that will be making my/our life easier.
Anyway, let me answer you Qs in turn:
Why not international law?
The list started becoming a bit unwieldy, so we limited it to the 21 categories. If you or anyone else thinks that we should add other categories in the future, please let Shalini know (shalini@avvo.com). Shalini is our new community manager. I will be blogging about her later this week.
What percent does one have to devote to a particular area of law to qualify?
The practical cut-off was roughly 20%. I say “practical” bc it depended on the data set. If there were ten lawyers rated “Superb” and they were all 100% in a practice area, we never made it to the 20% people. We also double-checked every lawyer’s website to ensure that their practice focus was consistent with their Avvo Profile.
On what date will this be determined?
It was locked on April 15th.
In other words, if I list 5% in some other area of law (like one that international law encompasses) can I still make it?
Per my discussion above, you would have a tough time making it bc there will be many people in front of you that have your stellar score but spend, say, 80% of their time in the relevant practice area.
I hope this adequately answers your questions.

Mark,
Makes sense. Thanks.
