The Financial Times weighs in on Avvo . . .

January 30th, 2008 by Conrad Saam, Marketing

Avvo was covered in a very positive light by both the print and online editions of Financial Times.

Patti Waldmeir wrote Internet as legal aid in the Financial Times which covers Avvo from a consumer benefit perspective.

“Avvo, founded by a former lawyer for the online travel site Expedia.com, aims to provide consumer-friendly attorney rankings, based on things such as the lawyer’s years of experience, publications, peer reviews and recognition, expertise, disciplinary record, and consumer feedback. Nowhere else on the internet is such information easily available.”

Client Reviews in the House

Many of you have noticed how the Client Review portion of our site seems slightly disconnected (you can’t sort by client ratings, you can’t filter to lawyers that have client reviews, etc

Lawyer Sharon Chirichillo On Avvo

January 24th, 2008 by GuestAuthor

Attorney Sharon Chirichillo graciously offered to participate in our guest blogger series. Sharon founded The Law Offices of Sharon Chirichillo, a 6 lawyer DUI criminal defense firm located in Olympia, WA. She was an early adopter of Avvo and is a prolific participant in Avvo Answers.

Got Avvo?

Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s counsel that “[i]njustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” I became an attorney. His call to action was based in respect and truth. Throughout the process of becoming an attorney I hold on to those tenets.

Before I began my criminal defense six person law office in Olympia, I had read a library full of books regarding small business ownership. Basically the information sifted into three factors: business plan, budget, and marketing plan.

I started by visiting various non-legal business groups in my community to see which one might fit my values and goals. Wanting to serve my community in other ways a fellow business person invited me to join Rotary. It is with Rotary that I crystallized my vision.

There is a Four-Way Test of the Things Rotarians Think, Say and Do: First, is it the truth? Second, is it fair to all concerned? Third, will it build goodwill and better friendships? And finally, the fourth, will it be beneficial to all concerned?

These four tests and the commitment to achieve for justice are the foundation in how we govern our practice. Especially in its application to marketing concepts this foundation is keen. Our firm does not play games, psych other people out, and be anything but what we commit for our clients, aggressive representation with compassionate counsel for justice.

Consistently we carry that view to our clients. In fact, truth and our commitment to justice is exactly what attract people to our firm. Bottom line, we deeply care for our client’s outcome and will be tenacious to achieve reasonable and sometimes miraculous results.

Following this connection for truthful marketing concepts, it was a client who first introduced me to Avvo. He pointed out that I had a profile and it was not claimed. I went to Avvo’s site, checked it out and found it fascinating. I was drawn to the features of attorney claiming profile, client rating attorney and peer rating attorney aspects. I have been used to being rated through Martindale-Hubbell and have been an advocate to be rated as an attorney.

Avvo has been a tremendous springboard in promoting access of the public to attorneys. A useful feature is that the public can ask questions for an attorney to answer. I value answering people’s questions. Through the writing, it seems to help the public connect with the legal system. For most people, the legal system is convoluted and inaccessible. Avvo precipitates a bridge for the public to bring a voice that can be heard.

In particular, my clients enjoy Avvo. Most of my client’s are highly computer savvy. My client’s tell me they use Avvo as a way to get informed and ask questions. I find that Avvo helps my client’s to navigate through the haze of the judicial system and feel more secure in getting answers.

I see that Avvo assists me to be beneficial for all concern in promoting the essence of our practice. Our commitment is to our clients to uphold compassionate counsel with aggressive representation towards justice. Avvo assists me to corroborate that genuineness.

Avvo at top of Bob Ambrogi’s Five Most Notable Legal Sites in 2007

Law as Results…Part 2

January 21st, 2008 by Paul Bloom

Last week Mark blogged that every lawyer at Seattle-based Stanislaw Ashbaugh had claimed their Avvo Profiles and put the Avvo Badge on the profile pages of the Stanislaw Ashbaugh web site. Last Friday they went a step further, taking out an advertisement in the Puget Sound Business Journal. Under the headline “Results Speak Louder Than Words”, the ad shows the bio pages of four Stanislaw Ashbaugh attorneys (Joe Campos, Richard Skalbania, David Ashbaugh, and Robert Marconi), with the Avvo Badge displayed on each.

Stanislaw Ashbaugh Ad

As the marketing guy at Avvo, I wish I could take some credit for coming up with this idea, but the credit belongs entirely to Stanislaw Ashbaugh partner Joe Campos and Chief Results Officer Annie Lombroia. In fact, there is no marketing arrangement between Avvo and Stanislaw Ashbaugh, and Avvo didn’t contribute to the creation or publication of the ad (nor did Stanislaw Ashbaugh ask us to do so).

Every day we hear stories of law firms using Avvo to build their presence on the Internet and attract new clients. It’s great to see the folks at Stanislaw Ashbaugh not only embrace Avvo as a tool to help build their practice, but to so proudly promote it to their peers and clients.

Seattle Law Blogger Meet-up

January 16th, 2008 by Conrad Saam, Marketing

Last night I attended a get together of Seattle area law bloggers, put on by Mike Atkins, who writes the Seattle Trademark Lawyer Blog. It was hosted at Graham and Dunn who unequivocally have the best legal offices in Seattle, on the tip of pier 70 in Elliott Bay. The discussion centered around the effectiveness and benefits of blogging with inevitable forays into technology and the legal implications of lawyers who blog. My biggest take-away is that blogging is an effective source not only for finding new clients, but also for demonstrating a level of public expertise and thus sealing the deal with hot prospects. Further, blogs are equally effective for consumer facing lawyers as well as those who serve businesses. The Godfather of Legal Blogging, Kevin O’Keefe at lexBlog has known this for years, if you are on the fence about blogging as a marketing tool, give him a call.

Seattle Law Blogger Meet-up

I had a chance to chat with Sarah Bird, from SEOMoz who should be guest blogging here some time soon. Super-smart Dan Harris of the very successful China Law Blog talked for me at length about blogging, the importance of reputation management for lawyers and his take on Avvo. Jill Pugh, who writes the Employment Law Blog promised to claim her profile on Avvo. I was disappointed to miss chatting with Eric Chiappinelli, Associate Dean of the Seattle University School of Law who also writes the Business Entities Online blog.

Additional blogs included:

    Marler Blog
    Washington State Criminal Defense
Criminal Defense Law with an Apple
    Washington State Patent Law Blog
    Canadian Trademark Blog
    Employment Advisory Blog
